Cash register information for everyday use.

Find an accessible introduction to record-keeping, electronic tills and proposed changes, with further details to explore.

From sale to receipt and data.

For a covered electronic register, the same sale involves different tasks. Go through the whole process once instead of only looking at what comes out of the printer.

Current law

Receipts

For covered transactions, the receipt must be issued and made available in direct connection with the transaction. Paper is possible; electronic provision currently requires the receipt recipient's consent and a standardised data format. Other legal requirements remain unaffected.

Practical recommendations

Review your processes.

Ask your provider for a clearly explained test process on your own register. Have the sale, receipt provision and cancellation explained, and note open questions. This demonstration helps you understand your setup; it is not a certificate of complete legal compliance.

Data access

A receipt handed over and access to stored register data are different topics. Clarify with the provider how to access data and exports. Discuss with your tax adviser which documents are required for your particular register management and retention obligations.

Digital receipts in the cash-register draft: proposed changes

Distinguish current electronic receipts from proposed digital availability. Prepare formats, delivery and special systems objectively.

What is planned for 2028
  1. Electronic receipt today
The draft generally provides for electronic availability in a standardised data format.

  2. Content and delivery
A QR code or terminal printout alone does not prove that all requirements are met.

  3. Special equipment
The draft contains a transitional rule for certain systems with a weighing function; its conditions must be checked separately.

Practical recommendations

For your register provider

Use a typical sale as an example. Ask to be shown each step and where you can find the associated documents afterwards.

Receipts and register data
  1. Document how card payments, cash payments and any delivery platforms enter the records.

  2. Ask for a demonstration of receipt provision, cancellations and data export on your own register.

  3. Keep TSE documents, existing register notifications and data exports where they can be found.

Frequently asked questions.

Do I need to buy a new register now?

The plans for 2028 do not create a blanket obligation to buy a register today. What matters is the rules already in force, your business processes and whether your existing register is suitable. Our check helps you separate these questions.

Has the cash-register obligation for 2028 already been enacted?

On 23 September 2026, the Federal Cabinet approved a government draft. This is a step in the legislative process, not yet an enacted law. Changes remain possible.

Can I use the check without signing up?

Yes. You receive guidance directly on the page. Your answers stay in your browser during the check. They are not copied into a contact form.

Can I get binding legal advice here?

No. The check provides guidance on selected cash-register rules based on your answers. For special cases or unclear information, it shows which questions to discuss with your tax adviser.
